Visual Flight Rules

The pilot who is not an IFR licensed commercial pilot is a VFR rated pilot.

These pilots navigate by following landmarks such as roads, rivers and railways. They can also use large landmarks, eg towns, as waypoints. To recognise the correct town, they must find landmarks within the town that identifies it. These can include the particular location of racecourses, bridges, church and water towers.

The ERSA pilot's guide for Archerfield airport in Brisbane includes the reporting point "Target" which is a local shopping center with a Target brand store. Painted on the roof of this building is a huge red target. It can be seen for miles!
